The University of Southern California's U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013 entry, Solar Canopy, is emblematic of the central mission of the university itself. The enrichment of the human mind and spirit are achieved through highly integrated teaching, research, artistic creation, professional practice, and public service.

The team's focus is on the development of a truly accessible model for energy-independent, low-cost housing that can be rapidly deployed and reflects the best qualities of indoor-outdoor living in Southern California. It is interested in advancing the conversation initiated by the mid-20th-century Case Study houses in California, a legacy that speaks directly to affordable and efficient housing for the masses. Simultaneously, the team is interested in finding solutions to the perpetual shortage of fresh water and will employ strategies that maximize re-use and conservation.
