Purdue University Computer-Animated Walkthrough (Text Version)

This is the text version of Purdue University's U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 computer-animated walkthrough.

[The viewing camera shows a wide angle view of house and rotates around house counter-clockwise. As the camera approaches the front door, it zooms in to focus on the porch.]

Voiceover: Purdue University's INhome conveys a perfect blend of versatility, comfort, and innovation. The INhome is a family-style home with Midwest inspiration in perfect harmony with its natural environment year round. By adapting to climates of all seasons, the INhome is able to provide a safe, energy-efficient residence. In addition to being energy-efficient, the INhome harnesses the sun's power to generate electricity from an array of 8-kilowatt photovoltaic panels. This will enable the house to become net-zero. The INhome also utilizes passive shading techniques to optimize house performance. For example, the south facing windows allow sunlight to enter the house during the winter, and the roof overhang shades them in the summer.

[The interior of the house is shown, focusing on the open kitchen, then slowly rotating to the left to see the living room with large windows, the dining area with sliding glass doors, and back around to focus on the kitchen again. The camera pans up to view the clerestory windows at the top of the vaulted ceiling.]

Voiceover: As you enter the house, the open floor design sets a unique atmosphere that only the INhome design can provide. Having the living room, dining room, and kitchen openly designed allows for easy conversation with family and friends. The vaulted ceiling enhances the elegance of the house by eliminating the compact feeling often associated with smaller homes . The vaulted ceiling empowers free and natural daylighting from the clerestory windows, which open to provide natural ventilation throughout the house when outdoor weather conditions are desirable.

[The camera pans right to focus on the living wall in between the living room and kitchen, which stretches up to the ceiling and is covered with live plants on a vertical wall.]

Voiceover: Another keynote feature to the INhome is the living wall, which is integrated with the HVAC system to filter out contaminants within the air. This also reduces the need to mechanically ventilate the house and allows for a better union with nature.

[The camera continues down the hallway and into the bathroom on the left, where the viewer sees a double lavatory, glass shower, and toilet. The camera pans up to view the clerestory windows in the bathroom and the high ceiling.]

Voiceover: The bathroom is centrally located and convenient to all areas.

[The camera rotates back out across the hall to the open kitchen plan, turning to show the cabinetry and appliances.]

Voiceover: Fully equipped with the most cost-effective and energy-efficient appliances on the market, the open kitchen design is efficient and allows social interaction while preparing meals.

[From kitchen, the camera walks down the rear hallway to the second bedroom on the right, behind the kitchen. The viewer enters the bedroom and rotates around to see a sofa and desk, then fades out.]

Voiceover: During the day, the second bedroom can be used as a quiet place for study, finances, and reading, as well as doubling as a guest bedroom or a second bedroom if necessary to accommodate a growing family.

[The camera fades in on the laundry/utility room, where a mechanical closet to the left is stationed, and pans to the right to show the door to the garage and a washer and dryer on the right. The camera rotates back around to exit the laundry room through the kitchen.]

Voiceover: The washer and dryer are nestled together in a utility room between the garage and kitchen.

[The camera walks through the kitchen and down the rear hall to the left, where the master bedroom is located. The viewer walks through the master bedroom, viewing the bed and transom windows, and pans to the left, where a door to the screen porch leads.]

Voiceover: Finally, the master bedroom is a private getaway from the rest of the house. The tray ceiling is an additional design feature to enhance the space.

[The viewer walks onto the screen porch, exiting the master bedroom.]

Voiceover: For the warmer months, a screened porch is conveniently located off of the master bedroom, allowing residents a retreat from their day.

[The camera exits the porch from an exterior opening to the right and pans out to wide angle view of front of house, slowly rotating to give a complete view of the site and home.]

Voiceover: The attached garage completes the INhome as it is convenient and useful for homeowners who have to deal with the extreme weather conditions present in the Midwest. Purdue's INhome … coming in 2011.
