Solar Decathlon 2013

University of Louisville, Ball State University and University of Kentucky

University of Louisville, Ball State University and University of Kentucky’s Phoenix House placed 15th overall at the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013. The team tied for first in the Affordability Contest.

The Phoenix House returned to the University of Louisville after competing in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013. The bedrooms were transformed into the administrative offices for the Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research. Since its grand reopening on May 12, 2016, Phoenix House has been used for a variety of educational, research, and outreach activities, including:

  • Collecting and monitoring data on technologies to make homes more efficient, such as solar panels, battery storage and electrochromic windows, which trap or keep out heat from the sun
  • Teaching engineering students more about solar power generation
  • Hosting faculty discussions on energy and sustainability

The Conn Center organizes tours for high school and undergraduate students and open house events throughout the year. The Conn Center also hosts faculty discussions on energy and sustainability.
