Solar Decathlon 2013

Southern California Institute of Architecture and California Institute of Technology

Southern California Institute of Architecture and California Institute of Technology’s DALE House placed 14th overall at the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2013. The team earned fourth place in the Communications Contest.

After the Solar Decathlon, the DALE House returned to the Southern California Institute of Architecture campus, where it remained for over a year. Many attempts were made to find DALE a permanent home, including hosting an open house to market the house to buyers. However, the house was ultimately disassembled and its parts were fully recycled.

DALE (Dynamic Augmented Living Environment) was designed to embrace the Southern Californian climate and style of living. The house featured a large outdoor living space and interchangeable platforms that could act as solar thermal collectors, a sports rack, or hammocks.
