This advanced-level course is for those familiar with building sciences who want to gain practical experience with zero energy projects or instruction.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon® is partnering with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to host the next Solar Decathlon Professionals Program (SD Pro) cohort!

Earn up to 23.5 GBCI continuing education credits (Green Business Certification Inc.) by enrolling in the virtual, hands-on, zero-energy design course!

  • The training is a blended learning experience of online, on-demand content and live virtual weekly sessions. The course incorporates the Solar Decathlon’s Building Science Education Series, as well as online weekly sessions with the instructor and students.
  • The summer cohort runs from June 7 to Aug. 9. Virtual, live sessions will be held on Wednesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. EDT.

  • Students will complete a net zero energy building design project.

SD Pro builds on the success of the Solar Decathlon collegiate competition to provide industry professionals with an opportunity to develop building science expertise and gain practical experience designing zero energy projects.

This advanced-level course is designed for those familiar with general building sciences who want a deeper understanding to apply concepts to green building projects or teaching. Potential participants might include early to mid-level professionals, facility managers, or higher education faculty.

Course instructorChris Schaffner, PE, LEED Fellow, has 34 years of experience in the design of building systems with a focus on energy efficiency and sustainability. He has been an active leader and educator for USGBC and the green building industry.
