Solar Decathlon Build Challenge Prize Amounts Announced

Thursday, November 1, 2018

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is excited to announce the prize amounts for the Solar Decathlon 2020 Build Challenge. Solar Decathlon Build Challenge teams work during a two-year period to design and build complete houses that incorporate state-of-the-art energy and building design practices and technologies. DOE will select up to 12 finalist teams across the Local Build and National Showcase Divisions. All finalist teams that meet Solar Decathlon Build Challenge requirements will receive prize funds to assist in defraying their costs. Funds will be provided at various points during the two-year period pending completion of specific deliverables and requirements.

  • Local Build finalist teams will compete and exhibit their homes in their local region. Qualifying Local Build teams will receive $25,000.
  • National Showcase teams will compete and exhibit their solutions before panels of industry expert jurors in Washington, D.C., in July 2020, as part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. Qualifying National Showcase teams will receive $130,000.

Solar Decathlon continues to push the envelope on design of the most high-performance, efficient, affordable, innovative buildings while leveraging opportunities to showcase student innovation, further STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education, and foster workforce development. The Solar Decathlon offers two tracks that build on the strengths of previous DOE student competitions: (1) the Build Challenge and (2) an annual Design Challenge. Applications for both Challenges are due on November 6, 2018, by 5 p.m. EST. Additional details are on the Solar Decathlon website.
