Solar Decathlon 2011 Kicks Off With Schematic Design Review

More than 200 Solar Decathlon teams and organizers travelled from around the world to gather in Arlington, Virginia, May 21–22, 2010, for a schematic design review. The event marked the first in-person meeting for the full Solar Decathlon 2011 group.

The review began on Friday with a welcome speech by Solar Decathlon Director Richard King and team introductions. On Saturday, the teams met with individual Solar Decathlon organizers to review their plans for 2011.

Sessions focused on:

  • The Solar Decathlon 2011 building code
  • DC electrical requirements
  • Site operations
  • Health and safety
  • Public exhibit requirements
  • Team Web site requirements
  • Design deliverables
  • Competition strategy
  • The Affordability contest
  • Event logistics
  • Director introductions
  • Department of Energy resources.

In addition, teams were encouraged to take a hosted tour of the Solar Decathlon event site on the National Mall and visit the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 Finalists: A Special Presentation exhibit at the National Building Museum.
